We all know that the long humid days of summer in Rockport, Texas are ideal for all the wonderful outdoor activities that our brilliant city offers on a daily basis. There’s nothing better than strolling along our delightful beaches, fishing from the pier, boating in the bay or birdwatching along the coast… so long as the sun is out that is. So what do you do when the weather turns and the dreary rainy days force us indoors to escape the nasty wet weather? How do you occupy the kids when all they want to do is flop on the couch, watch TV or play video games? Here are 3 of our favorite indoor activities that are family friendly, fun and the best part… FREE!

Rockport Center for the Arts features fantastic artworks from many of Rockport’s local artisans. The gallery features sculptures, paintings and jewelry designed and crafted by some of Rockport’s own and proudly displays them in a gallery format. The Center also features a sculpture garden (for those breaks in the rain) where visitors can wander freely and admire some of the fantastic works on display. The Center also offers a variety of classes and workshops for aspiring artists of all ages, some of which are free to join! Exhibitions change on a fairly regular basis so be sure to check with the gallery to see what’s new and be sure to check out the gift shop when you’re there . The Bay Education Center is a “must see” for both residents of and visitors to Rockport, Texas. The Center focuses on exploration and education about our local ecology and features displays on our areas bodies of water and the life that they support. Explore hands-on exhibits and learn about coral reefs, tides, the ocean and all the creatures that inhabit our local waters and wetlands. You’ll be astounded at the amount of life our waters support and visitors will learn how important and fragile our ecosystem is. The premiere attraction of the Center is the Science on a Sphere exhibit; a digital display that illustrates Earth science in an exciting state of the art presentation. The Aquarium at Rockport Harbour has long been a local favorite of Rockport residents and visitors. Featuring displays on all the various types of marine life and ecosystems that can be found in the Rockport area, the aquarium sneaks in a bit of education disguised as a lot of fun! Displays showcase bays, jetties, sea grasses and the gulf and let visitors explore the numerous forms of marine life that are found underwater in the multitude of habitats that exist in our waterways and ocean. The Education Center at the Aquarium features documentaries on the various types of ecosystems and marine life as well as various summer activities including crafts, games and movie nights that include free popcorn and show G and PG rated movies for the whole family to enjoy.
