Get Ready for Lamar's 2016 LaMardi Gras!
Held annually at the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department station just outside of Rockport, Texas, LaMardi Gras is the Live Oak Peninsula’s very own Mardi Gras celebration – Coastal Bend style! This year’s festivities and fundraising takes place Friday, February 12th and Saturday, February 13th at the new Lamar VFD, 302 Bois D'Arc.
The Lamar Volunteer Fire Department
Established in the 1960s, the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department services the Lamar and Holiday Beach communities as well as assisting the Fulton and Rockport Fire Departments across the Copano Causeway as needed. Completely made up of volunteers, the Lamar VFD is often the first on scene for any fire, medical emergency, car accident or natural disaster. As volunteers, each member of the department undergoes extensive training and is expected to be available to put themselves at risk to attend other people’s emergencies at a moment’s notice – all without being paid. No different than any other volunteer fire department in the country, the Lamar VFD requires a substantial amount of money to operate. Not only does the department require funding to properly and fully equip the trucks and volunteers with the latest firefighting and safety equipment, but also the ongoing costs to run and operate the firehouse.
VFD Fundraising and the LaMardi Gras
One of the methods used to raise funds for the equipment and operation is the annual LaMardi Gras celebration. Now in its 15th year, LaMardi Gras helps to provide just some of the fundraising necessary for the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department through a fantastic Mardi Gras celebration with a local Texas flare. As with past celebrations, 2016’s LaMardi Gras promises to provide two days of outstanding entertainment, fantastic food and a variety of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Festivities kick off on Friday night at 5pm with live music, the opening of the casino and the start of the ever popular raffle. Also, don’t forget to vote for your favorite candidate for the LaMardi Gras King and Queen and watch the Coronation at 8pm where they’ll crown this year’s festival royalty. Great food will be available at a variety of different booths featuring traditional Mardi Gras fare as well as the now famous baked potato topped with Lamar VFD Brisket! To quench your thirst, stop by the beverage garden for a cold beer, wine cooler or soft drink.
On Saturday kicks off at 10am and the always popular parade starts at 11am so pick your favorite spot to watch the homemade floats, catch some beads, souvenirs and candy. A live auction takes place from 6 to 7pm and the raffle continues from 10am until 9pm when the drawing will take place to see who takes away the coveted items. Remember, the more tickets you buy and bid on your favorite items, the better your chances! Oh, and did we mention that brisket topped baked potato? The food and beverages return on Saturday to quench your thirst and satisfy your Cajun cravings.
Make sure that you get out to the LaMardi Gras celebrations this year and donate as much as you can for this fantastic cause. Oh, and if you happen to spot any of the Rockport Properties team, stop and introduce yourself… we love to meet new people!
