The 28th annual HummerBird Celebration takes flight again in Rockport and Fulton this September 15th to the 18th, 2016 and promises to deliver an experience not soon forgotten by those that love the feisty feathered flier – the hummingbird. Not only does the festival attract thousands of Ruby-throated hummingbirds during their yearly migration, but also attracts over 5,000 human visitors to the Rockport and Fulton area who want to witness first hand this marvelous display of nature.
Started in the late 1980s by a group of wildlife experts and volunteers, the festival celebrates the fall migration of the Ruby-throated hummingbirds as they pass through the Live Oak Peninsula on the way to their wintering destinations in Mexico and South America. In order to make the grueling 800-mile plus trip across the Gulf, thousands upon thousands of these lively winged wonders will stop and feed in Rockport and Fulton in order to build up enough body fat to make the long journey south.
Every year hundreds of volunteers, known affectionately as Hummer Home Hosts, plant and maintain flower gardens that attract the hummers and often provide feeding stations for the hungry little travelers. Many of these hosts open their yards to us human visitors as well so we can learn about what flowers attract the hummingbirds and witness the feeding frenzy of potentially hundreds of birds in one yard. Stop by any one of the information booths around town to pick up a map of the self-guided tour and please be respectful, and quiet, when entering a Host’s yard.
While the focus of the festival is the lively hummingbird, the celebration will also educate and present opportunities to learn about and watch a variety of local birds in their natural habitats and an outstanding assortment of wildlife that is a part of the Rockport/Fulton community. The HummerBird Celebration Features a variety of activities, exhibits and speakers that will help educate and entertain all while offering the opportunity to explore the fantastic Rockport and Fulton areas.
