rockport a destination for artists

We all know, those of us that are lucky enough to live here anyway, that Rockport is a vibrant community that offers an endless amount of outdoor activities and is a top destination for fishing, crabbing and a multitude of outdoor activities… we’ve even been named as one of the best coastal small towns in the country according to USA Today. But did you know that Rockport isn’t just a well-known fishing village? Rockport is also a thriving artist community and has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Artist Colonies in the country by Coastal Living Magazine. It’s true! Take a look at what makes Rockport a destination for artists.

You can’t mention art in Rockport without mentioning the Rockport Center for the Arts. This non-profit organization has been instrumental in keeping the art scene alive in our community since its inception in 1969. Boasting three spectacular galleries, the center is not a museum but rather a place where both artists and those that just appreciate art can gather view local art, take part in a workshop or just spend a leisurely afternoon getting inspiration from the gallery. Rockport Center for the Arts is also host to the annual Rockport Art Festival that showcases nationally recognized and award winning artists and plays host to more than 10,000 over the July 4th weekend each year. Now in its 46th year, the festival continues to draw visitors to the area all while supporting the art community and economy of Rockport.

Other than the exceptional Center for the Arts, Rockport has plenty of other arts related venues and activities that showcase how spectacular our local creative community is:

  • Rockport is home to more than a dozen local galleries featuring sculpture, painting, photography and pottery and many other unique forms of art expression. Take a wander through some of the shops and galleries and find your next center piece or focal point painting to hang on your wall.
  • More than 300 artists call Rockport home and draw on the local landscape, people and lifestyle for their inspiration. Such well-known artists like Steve Russell, Sally Mitchell and Kent Ullberg live and create in our community year round.
  • The annual Tour of Homes held each spring takes visitors on a tour of some of Rockport’s finest homes and showcases private art collections. These self-guided tours reveal the wonderful architecture and art that make our community a unique place to live.

As you wander around our sea-side community you can clearly see where many of our local artists find their muse. Our fantastic city is an inspiration for so many of the wonderful works of art that hang in our galleries, coffee shops, municipal building and adorn the walls of our very own homes. The thriving art community of Rockport continues to bring a vibrant culture to our everyday lives and showcases our beautiful community to the world. With continuous support and encouragement, our local art scene will continue to thrive and endure to be a part of the fabric that makes Rockport such a fantastic place to live, play, work and create.
